Department of Transportation (DOT) Physicals

For commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers, safety is paramount. Each time you turn the key, you are responsible for your own safety and the safety of others on the road. Because of this we want to ensure the health of those behind the wheel. This is done through a physical exam performed by one of our two Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration certified providers. We perform these examinations every day and we work with you and your busy schedule to make sure that you can come whenever is most convenient for you. In most cases we allow same day appointments and even walk-ins so that you can be seen immediately, become certified or recertified, and get back out on the road with no interruption.

What will happen during my DOT Physical?

During a DOT physical a variety of physical exams are performed to ensure that you are healthy enough to be on the road. The following things will be examined during your physical:

· Your Vision: A vision test will be test. All Illinois drivers are required to have at least 20/40 vision in each eye with or without correction and at least 70” peripheral in the horizontal meridian, measured in each eye. This means if you wear correctional eyewear (such as glasses or contact lenses) make sure to bring them with you to your visit.

· Your Blood Pressure and Heart Rate: Our doctors will search for high blood pressure or irregular heartbeats. We understand that some patients are under stress and other factors that can raise blood pressure so we will give you time to relax and take multiple readings to make sure your blood pressure is accurate.

· A Urinalysis: Make sure you come with a full bladder because your doctor will want to perform a urinalysis. A urinalysis is a great way to test your overall health. It can see kidney and urinary tract disorders, if your dehydrated, your protein levels, your sugar and ketone levels (which can show if you have diabetes), Bilirubin (a product of red blood cell breakdown) which can indicate liver damage or disease, detects infections, and sees if there's blood in your urine. This is done mostly to test for diabetes but can be helpful for you to know in case it shows any small health issues you can fix before they become big issues.

· Finally, the Physical Exam: During this the doctor will check your Eyes, Ears, Mouth and Throat, Heart (for murmurs and abnormalities), Abdomen, Spine, and Extremities.

This may seem like a lot but it’s a fairly simple visit that we can perform quickly for you. If you'd like to learn more about this visit or want to schedule an appointment, click the button below. If you're in a hurry and need one performed immediately, we also take walk-ins!
